FORMER South African president Nelson Mandela will continue radiation treatment for his prostate cancer after considering all options, his office said on Wednesday. Mandela’s representative Zelda la Grange said in a statement that two physicians, a radiotherapist and five urologists — including Mandela’s own urologist — met on August 3 to review the 83-year-old’s treatment. “Reports on recent medical examinations of the former president were presented to the meeting and confirmed that Mr Mandela’s general health remains good,” La Grange said. She added he was fit to carry out his usual activities. The size and grade of the tumour was considered, along with the results of radiological tests, and responses to hormonal treatment. Earlier this month, the elderly statesman joked that if the disease beat him he would seek out billionaires in the next world to build schools and clinics, as he does now. – AFP
