DONALD WOODS APPLAUDED, BROTHER DIES

THE death of South Africa’s newspaper editor and anti-apartheid activist Donald Woods ”deprives the world of a great freedom fighter and humanist”, the UN’s top human rights official said on Tuesday. Mary Robinson, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said his death was felt ”even more acutely” because it happened on the eve of the World Conference Against Racism. Meanwhile, Harland Woods, the older brother Donald Woods, died in a Durban hospital on Tuesday three days after his famous younger sibling passed away in England. Harland Woods (71) suffered a fatal heart attack a day after undergoing lung cancer surgery, his daughter said. ”He had his lung removed and he was doing well, but then he had a heart attack,” she said. He had been a shopkeeper. – Reuters, AFP
