OBASANJO SACKS FOUR DIRECTORS FROM AIRLINE

THE Nigerian government has sacked four more directors of its ailing national carrier, bringing to five the number of senior officials removed in under a week, officials said on Tuesday. The government on Friday removed Nigeria Airways’ managing director, Abayomi Jones, saying he was not doing enough to prepare the airline’s privatisation. In a statement on Tuesday, the Aviation Ministry said President Olusegun Obasanjo had, in addition, approved the dismissal of the directors of finance, administration, airline operations and engineering. No reason was given for their dismissal. Established more than 40 years ago, the airline is reeling under a crippling debt burden and years of corruption and mismanagement, during which it has been forced to sell off most of its planes. – AFP
