UMTATA MAYOR’S CAR SET ALIGHT

The private car of the mayor of Engcobo, near Umtata in the Eastern Cape, was set alight early on Sunday morning. Mayor Mthetheli Xundu said the incident occurred at about 3am. ”I heard the alarm of the car going off,” he said. ”When I looked outside the car was ablaze. With the help of neighbours we managed to put out the fire.” Police found an unexploded handgrenade tied to one of the car wheels. Xundu said he suspected that certain people in his area was unhappy with laws passed by the municipality. He made it clear, however, that he was not going to resign. He said he would only tighten security around him. Police were still investigating the incident.- Sapa
