Cape Town | Wednesday
ARSONISTS attacked the offices of a Cape Town-based Muslim organisation early on Wednesday, possibly as a result of the attacks on the United States, an organisation representative said.
Muslim Judicial Council secretary general Achmat Sedick said petrol was poured on the double front doors of the building and set alight at around 3:00 am (0100 GMT).
“(This was) probably with the intention that it must burn further into the building,” he said.
Sedick said the caretaker, who slept at the back of the building, had been woken by the smell of smoke and extinguished the fire.
Sedick said police forensic experts had visited the scene and checked the building for bombs.
“We are linking it to the negative publicity that has been happening ever since the American attack, and the type of Islamophobia that came around blaming Muslims,” Sedick said.
