Petrol price hiked by 12c

Johannesburg | Monday

THE price of all grades of petrol will increase by 12 cents a litre from Wednesday, the Department of Minerals and Energy said on Monday.

In Gauteng motorists will now pay R3,75 per litre while those living at the coast will pay R3,64 per litre.

Diesel will increase by four cents per litre to R3,25 in Gauteng, while at the coast a litre of diesel will now cost R3,14.

Illuminating paraffin will increase by 10 cents per litre to R2,45 in Gauteng and R2,27 a litre at the coast.

The department said the decrease in crude oil prices and consequently refined petroleum product prices, during the last eight days of the review period — 27 August to 25 September — only had a minor positive impact on the average under the recovery of fuels.

Period international crude oil prices increased to $30 per barrel on September 17 and thereafter decreased to $21 per barrel on September 25.

The department said the daily under recovery price for petrol decreased by approximately 6c/l from a level of 20c/l prior to the decreases in international crude and product prices.

Should crude oil and product prices remain on September 25 levels, it is anticipated that there could only be minor price adjustments — upwards or downwards — in November.

For petrol and illuminating paraffin the average international prices increased in the period under review while that of diesel decreased slightly.

The average rand/US dollar exchange rate for August 27 to September 25 was 8,5406 compared to 8,2725 during the previous period. – Sapa
