We know that David Macfarlane has been told to stop writing about the South African National NGO coalition (Sangoco) because they have complained to the editor of the Mail & Guardian, although they have always been given the chance to respond.
Things are getting worse. We only have funds for one more month in the organisation. The M&G is the only newspaper that has had the courage to write about the rot in the NGO sector, and your decision to agree to Sangoco director Abie Dithlake’s demands that you stop publishing information about the organisation is horrifying. The leadership of Sangoco is being criticised around the world for the way it forced decisions through at the racism conference.
Dithlake’s boast to staff that he “will take on” the M&G leaves us feeling angry. Please help. – Concerned NGO Activists, Braamfontein
The editor replies: Nobody from Sangoco has tried to tell the editor of the M&G what the newspaper should or should not carry about the organisation.
Anyone who sought to dictate to the M&G in this fashion would be sent packing. We are, however, willing to listen to any reasoned request that the M&G reconsider our coverage on any story or any topic. I have received no such request in the name of Sangoco.
