10 535 PRISONERS CAN’T AFFORD BAIL

ALTOGETHER 10 535 people were languishing in prisons around the country because they could not afford to pay bail of R1 000 or less, according to Correctional Services Minister Ben Skosana. In written reply to a question in the National Assembly by Hennie Smit (DA), Skosana said of these, 132 could not pay bail of under R100, and 613 could not pay bail of between R100 and R200. A total of 1202 people were unable to pay their bail of between R200 and R300, 386 between R300 and R400, and 3102 between R400 and R500. The rest, 5150, could not afford to pay between R500 and R1000, Skosana said. – Sapa
