Phindi Molefe (22), an entrant in ”Miss Fats” South Africa 2001, waits backstage for her number to be called. Last Friday evening the Johannesburg Civic trembled under the pudgy feet of 12 hopefuls vying for the title of the most voluptuous in the land. The only entry criterion is that contestants weigh in at a minimum of 80kg. Soweto-born Molefe was declared the winner. The prize: a trip to Cape Town, a PC training course, hair products and a home appliance not a treadmill. Photograph:Paul Botes
