COPS NAB ABALONE SMUGGLERS

WESTERN Cape police on Monday seized more than 6 000 shucked abalone and arrested eight people after searching a house in Silver Town, on the Cape Flats. Inspector Eben Groenewald said on Tuesday a special police task team attached to Operation Neptune acted on a tip-off and searched the house. They confiscated 6323 shucked abalone, three undersized shelled abalone, 10 crayfish of which three were undersized and 75 limpets. Four deep freezers, a weighing scale and packing material was also seized. Eight people with ages ranging between 15 and 41 were arrested. Groenewald said the men were expected to appear in court soon on charges of contravening regulations relating to the Act on marine living resources. – Sapa
