1 000 people evicted in Johannesburg: man shot

A man was shot and wounded on Wednesday morning when a fight broke out at the scene of an eviction in the Johannesburg city centre.

Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said Metro police cordoned off a portion of Jeppe street and Bree street between Troy and Klein streets in the city centre while they were assisting in evicting an estimated 1 000 people who were illegally occupying Amourdale Place in Bree street.

Some evictees became angry, and fighting broke out. A shot was fired and a man was hit in the shoulder and taken to hospital.

Amourdale Place is believed to be the property of an absentee landlord and was being closed down by the Johannesburg City Health Department.

Hundreds of bystanders watched the evictions which began at 5am on Wednesday and the pavements are stacked high with goods and chattels.

Minnaar said it was the evictees responsibility to move their belongings and the roads would remain closed until further notice – Sapa
