The justice department will attempt to speed up court cases involving sexual violence against women and children next year, Deputy Justice Minister Cheryl Gillwald said on Wednesday.
”I have made a personal pledge to President Thabo Mbeki in the last week that the department will have a campaign to provide physical resources dedicated to this programme,” she told reporters at a function to mark the end of the Sixteen Days of Activism campaign against the abuse of women and children.
”There will be more sexual offences courts rolled out this coming year. We are busy deciding where they will be,” she said.
Gillwald said her department’s two primary aims were to reduce the duration of sexual violence court cases and to increase the number of successful prosecutions in such cases.
