Kenya’s Rainbow Coalition names its candidate

The bulk of Kenya’s opposition parties on Tuesday named Mwai Kibaki, a 71-year-old former vice president, as their candidate in a crucial presidential poll expected in December.

Kibaki (71) was named by the National Rainbow Coalition, which groups more than a dozen opposition parties, including Kibaki’s own Democratic Party, and several former senior members of President Daniel arap Moi’s ruling Kenya African National Union (Kanu).

Moi, who has ruled since 1978, is ineligible to stand in the poll.
