Mozambique needs 70 000 tons of food

Mozambique needs more than 70 000 tons of food aid for over half a million people affected by drought in the south and centre of the country, authorities said Thursday.

”We need over 70,000 tons of food for immediate relief for over 500 000 people affected by drought,” National Disaster Management Institute (INGC) director Silvano Lanha told AFP.

Mozambique has in recent weeks received food aid from several countries, including the United States and Italy.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has also been assisting some 300 000 people in immediate need of aid through food-for-work programmes.

Southern Africa is experiencing its worst drought in a decade with Malawi, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe being the worst hit.
