The city of Johannesburg is to spend up to R5-million on upgrading sewers in Sandton ahead of the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the city’s water and sanitation service provider, Johannesburg Water (JW), said on Wednesday.
JW executive director Anthony Still said the company had carried out an investigation of the water and sewer networks around the various conference and accommodation venues to determine their condition.
While the investigation — made through the city’s closed circuit TV cameras — showed that in most instances the infrastructure was of world standard, some areas were in need of improvement.
Still said the Sandton collector sewer, which serves the Sandton CBD, was being upgraded. At present the sewer line is a 350mm diameter pipeline, but should be increased to 600mm diameter.
The increased capacity of this line would accommodate the future growing demands of the Sandton CBD, Still said. – Sapa
