A Briton has appeared in a Malawi court charged with sodomising boys from a local orphanage to whom he sometimes gave food, clothes and shelter, court officials said on Friday. The officials said a magistrates’ court here heard testimonies on Thursday from three boys among a dozen who allege to have been molested by Edward Heinz, a teacher at an international school in Blantyre. Heinz was arrested by police in November when he tried to flee the country. The officials said the boys told the court that on the first occasion they were molested, Heinz had given them a bath and fed them a meal before taking them to a room and sodomising them. The boys, who saw Heinz on and off over a two-year period, said he continued to molest them. They claimed they were too afraid to report the alleged abuse to the police. Heinz, who has pleaded not guilty, is represented by Malawian lawyer Ambokire Salim. The hearing is set to continue on Monday. – AFP
