A British family doctor convicted of killing 15 patients, and suspected of killing 200 or more, was found dead in his prison cell on Tuesday, the British Prison Service said.
Dr Harold Shipman was found hanging in his cell at Wakefield Prison in northern England at 6.20am and was pronounced dead at 8.10am, the British Prison service said on Tuesday.
Shipman, who worked in the Manchester suburb of Hyde, preyed largely on elderly woman, killing them with lethal injections. His crimes horrified the nation and raised questions about how he was able to evade detection for so many years.
He was convicted in 2000 of murdering 15 elderly patients and sentenced to life in prison. A judge who investigated the case later said Shipman murdered at least 200 other people since 1975. – Sapa-AP
