The startling truth about the Middle-East conflict and Jewish sentiment towards the Holy Land has no similarities to that of any nation in the world.
Just as Jews insist on preaching their obligation to aliyah (immigration to Israel), they need to accept that it has far-reaching implications.
If one studies the sad statistics of those killed since the beginning of the latest intifada, there is an alarming truth, which Israel refuses to accept responsibility for: indiscriminate killings, which include those perpetrated by Jewish settlers, account for more than 35% of deaths in Palestine. Do those who perform aliyah acquit themselves of this horrendous statistic? The Israeli government is asking their citizens and the world to support another war instead of a peaceful settlement.
Israel is set up for destruction. What was the message when they defended their right-wing Rahba’am Zevi, who headed a racist Jewish party called Moledet, or mother homeland, which called for the extermination of Christians and Muslims in Palestine and creating a pure Jewish state? The Palestinian Authority had evidence in July that Zevi and Avigdor Liberman had met settlers prior to the murderous attack on two Palestinian men and a baby. Yet when Zevi was assassinated he was made to look like a hero.
Israel is establishing a government of right-wingers, toughened hardliners who will stop at nothing, who will assert Israel’s right to occupy land in the Middle East by force, brutality, violation of human rights and even war. This, however, is not affording them peace but is sowing hatred and violence.
If the world and its leaders, like the United States president and the allies of Israel, back Israel in its policy of dealing with the conflict in the Middle East in the manner Israel chooses to do so now, then one can say that the world is selective in its implementation of the Geneva Convention and human rights policies.
Leopold Weiss, a reporter, visited Jerusalem at the end of 1922 for the newspaper, The Frankfurter Zeitung. In an informal interview with Chaim Weizmann, the leader of the Zionist Movement, surrounded by Ben Gurion, Menachem Begin and Moshe Dayan, they discussed the carving up of Palestine to pave the way for a Jewish state. When Weiss questioned Weizmann about the total disregard for the Palestinians in their proposed Jewish state, he asked: “And what about the Arabs?” Weizmann replied: “What about the Arabs? We expect they won’t be in majority after a few years.”
It is clear that Israel doesn’t want peace but the whole of occupied Palestine, regardless of the costs.
The world needs to unite on the excessive use of force and violence and the bullying tactics of the US and its allies. If we allow Israel to continue to act in this gruesome manner, we will be condemning Israel to self-destruction. E Mohamed, Claremont
