STUDENTS RAMPAGE AT NIGERIAN VARSITY

STUDENTS in the northern Nigerian city of Kano went on the rampage on Monday when striking teachers tried to stop them from taking their semester examinations. Students at Bayero University chased security guards and damaged cars of faculty members, who began a one-week strike on Monday over reports that the government planned to cut their pay. The irate students also chased the children of the teachers from classrooms, a university employee said. The episode began when some teachers went to an examination hall and asked all students to leave. “The students became enraged, rushed out of the hall and pursued the lecturers out of the campus. They also chased security personnel out of the university … and vandalised some of the teachers’ cars,” the staffer said. – AFP
