A YOUNG Grahamstown couple were rescued from a possible watery death in the heavy surf of the Umzimvubu River near Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape on Sunday by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI). Deon and Michelle du Toit, both experienced canoeists, were on vacation at the Transkei Wild Coast with their two-year-old daughter. They ran into serious trouble on Sunday when their double sea kayak capsized near the mouth of the fast-flowing and very muddy Umzimvubu River. They were unable to right their craft which had sprung a leak, they clung to it and were swiftly swept downstream towards the heavy surf at the river mouth. Fortunately, for the Du Toits, a local resident, Herbert McGregor, spotted them and immediately contacted the NSRI. – Sapa-AFP
