Johannesburg | Monday
FORMER Vryburg High School pupil Andrew Babeile would be released on parole from the Kimberley prison on Monday after serving almost two of his three year prison sentence for attempted murder.
Babeile was sentenced to an effective three years’ imprisonment in May 2000 after being convicted of attempted murder for stabbing a white pupil in an apparent racial incident.
He stabbed fellow pupil Christoff Erasmus in the neck with a pair of sewing scissors outside the school tuckshop in February 1999.
As part of his parole conditions, Babeile will be restricted to the Vryburg district and he will have to take part in programmes offered by the department of correctional services.
He will also be prohibited from indulging in any alcohol or drugs or visiting any place where alcohol or drugs are being sold.
The African National Congress Youth League, which campaigned vigorously for his release, said its president Malusi Gigaba would on Monday lead youths to welcome Babeile upon his release from the prison.
An ”Andrew Babeile welcome home rally”, was being planned for Wednesday. – Sapa
