Govt urged to abandon its case against the TAC

THERE were calls on Thursday for the government to abandon its Constitutional Court case against the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) over the supply of nevirapine to HIV-positive pregnant woman.

About 300 people marched to the court in Parktown, Johannesburg, to demand nevirapine for people living with HIV/Aids.

Cosatu representative Vusi Nhlapo called on the government to decentralise health care so that home care could become an option for people living with Aids.

He also said more health care workers had to be trained to cope with the Aids epidemic.

The Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, Njongonkulu Ndungane, expressed his and other church groups’ concern over the delays in implementing the distribution of medication to HIV-positive pregnant women.

”We are deeply concerned about the talks and delays while people are dying of Aids,” he said.

PAC member of parliament, Patricia de Lille, said the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS had been placed in the hands of the Constitutional Court.

”We know the judiciary will not let us down,” she said.

Two memorandums, which included demands for cheaper medicine for HIV/Aids sufferers, were handed to government. – Sapa
