Surfers and sardines

Solid overhead waves fanned by a stiff south-westerly offshore wind greeted surfers on the second day of the Mr Price Pro at North Beach in Durban on Wednesday morning.

The quality of the waves was reflected in the scores allocated by the judges. Damon Harvey (Australia) and Michael Roscoe (Warner Beach) produced excellent rides that earned them more than nine points out of a possible 10.

The Bay of Plenty was selected as the venue for the remaining seven heats in round two of the women’s event and the likes of Juliana Guimares (Brazil) and Australians Claire Bevilacqua, Heather McDonald and Karlee Mackie revelled in the conditions to advance to the last 32.

The 16 heats in round three of the men’s event and the first eight heats of round four are scheduled to be completed on Wednesday.

The Natal Sharks Board and rescue craft manned by lifeguards are still patrolling the area outside the surf breaks to provide a warning system for passing shoals of sardines. The NSB have not yet been able to replace the shark nets taken out last week due to the huge numbers of dolphins that continue to feed on the fish. – Sapa
