M&G Media, holding company of the Mail & Guardian, appointed a new board this week. It was chosen because of a change in ownership after Newtrust Company Botswana Limited (NCBL) acquired an 87,5% shareholding in the company.
The board members are Peter Vundla, Malegapuru William Makgoba, Govin Reddy, Rhoda Kadalie, Bob Phyllis, Hoosain Karjieker and Trevor Ncube, chief executive of NCBL.
Makgoba is one of two new members and was appointed chairperson. He is vice-chancellor and principal of the University of Natal.
“As a board we want to make sure the M&G brand remains exciting while at the same time maintaining excellent journalistic integrity and standards. We have staff that is young, loyal and committed. We are excited at the prospect of taking this important newspaper into new horizons led by a brilliant young editor,” he said.
Peter Vundla, the other new member, is deputy executive chairperson of African Merchant Bank.
Reddy was CEO of M&G Media before Ncube took over in August.
Kadalie is executive director of the Impumelelo Innovations Award Programme.
Bob Phyllis, former CEO of Guardian Media Group and chairperson of Guardian Newspapers, was chairman of the former board.
Hoossain Karjieker is the company’s financial director.
