Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula has appealed for calm in the wake of several explosions which rocked Soweto, killing at least one person on Wednesday.
The minister, along with his justice and intelligence counterparts, arrived in Soweto from Cape Town to receive a briefing from police.
Speaking through a representative, Nqakula said: ”We condemn this dastardly deed in the strongest terms. We appeal to our people to remain calm and not to panic.”
The South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) also condemned ”the terror attacks” in the strongest possible terms.
Russell Gaddin, National Chairman of the SAJBD, said that the bombings posed a dangerous challenge to the peaceful, democratic consensus South Africa had so successfully achieved.
He said that the blasts were an unacceptable throwback to a time of conflict that ”no decent South Africans would want to live through again”.
”We regard these senseless and cowardly attacks as an assault on the very fabric of our democratic society,” Gaddin said. – Sapa, M&G Reporter
