Britain’s Foreign Office on Wednesday warned of a terrorist threat on the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar in east Africa. The Foreign Office updated its travel advice for Tanzania to include a warning of a possible attack in Zanzibar, a popular tourist destination for Westerners.
”We have received information that an international terrorist group may be planning an attack on the island of Zanzibar,” the new travel advice on the Foreign Office’s official website said.
”British nationals in Tanzania, and especially in Zanzibar, should be vigilant,” the advisory said. That sentence had been updated to include the reference to Zanzibar, a Foreign Office representative said.
The representative couldn’t comment on the nature of the threat or the information leading to the new warning. Last week, the US State Department said it received information that a terrorist group may be planning an attack on an unspecified location frequented by Westerners on Zanzibar.
