Tanzania to host conference on globalisation

About 50 eminent personalities from across Africa will meet in the Tanzanian town of Arusha next week to discuss the effects of globalisation on the world’s poorest continent, the UN labour agency said on Friday.

The meeting, organised by the World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalisation, which was established last year by the UN International Labour Organization (ILO), will be held on February 6-7, the ILO’s office here said in a statement. The commission is co-chaired by Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa and Finnish President Tarja Halonen and it’s objective is to reach a consensus on how to make globalisation more inclusive and fair to both rich and poor nations.

Other notable officials expected to attend the conference include ILO’s Director General Juan Sumavia and the agency’s head of Africa office Regina Amadi-Njoku, according to the statement. – Sapa-AFP
