Junior doctors at Ghana’s largest hospital launched a strike on Monday, citing poor working conditions and the government’s delay in implementing a package promised to them.
”After having waited patiently for 16 months … the only means of registering our disapproval … is to withdraw our services until the government releases the much touted package for health workers,” doctors of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital said in a statement.
The statement said the doctors have a duty to fight for client-focused quality health care. ”We owe a responsibility to the people of this country to provide health care to the best of our ability”.
With the absence of the junior doctors who are made up of residents, medical officers and house officers, the pressure would be on the senior doctors and consultants to attend to patients.
Many patients will also be directed to other government hospitals and clinics in Accra. – Sapa-DPA
