FNB clients drawn into hacker’s net

About 139 First National Bank credit and debit card numbers were potentially compromised following a security breach in the United States last week, FNB representative William Ramwell said on Monday.

Ramwell said 5,4-million card numbers were ”hacked” when the security of a US-based card processing company’s computer systems were breached. However, no FNB clients were defrauded, the bank said.

”As a precautionary measure, we are contacting the 139 affected cardholders to inform them that we will be cancelling their cards and issuing them with new cards.

”In addition, all our cardholders enjoy automatic lost card insurance which protects them against fraud,” he said. FNB was monitoring the cards and its internal fraud detection systems had not detected anything suspicious.

Visa International and MasterCard confirmed recently that the computer systems of a third party payment card processor in the US were breached and as many as 5,4-million card account details could have been compromised.

”The only inconvenience for FNB’s customers is that they will have to be reissued with new cards. Because of automatic lost card protection they will not be charged for the issuing of the new card and PIN,” said Ramwell.

He said should any customers suspect they are victims of the fraud they should contact the FNB card fraud hotline on 011-371-1212. – Sapa
