Knives are out in PAC leadership race

Maxwell Nemadzivhanani, the suspended Limpopo chairman of the Pan Africanist Congress, has been instructed to appear before a national disciplinary committee next week at the PAC headquarters in Johannesburg.

Nemadzivhanani received his charge sheet this week. He is accused of ”instructing his bodyguards to assault a Mishack Sibuyi, secretary of the Bushbuckridge region in the Limpopo province, with the intention to cause bodily harm at a meeting convened by the [provincial executive committee] for audit purposes in Polokwane”.

The charge sheet claims that he:

  • Wilfully and maliciously with the intention to embarrass PAC president Stanley Mogoba, made statements to the media calculated to diminish the dignity of the president and the party.

  • Organised with his national organiser, Jabhi Ligege, for the SABC to attend a meeting between Mogoba and Ligege, with the intention to embarrass Mogoba and the party.

Nemadzivhanani responded with a letter to secretary general Thami ka Plaatjie, asking the national executive committee to reverse its decision to dissolve the provincial executive committee and reverse his suspension as the Limpopo chairman.

”The decision to dissolve the [provincial committee] followed an allegation of misconduct in respect of an assault case [that] was made against me. This does not justify the dissolution of the [committee]. If it is alleged, as it is the case, that I am the troublemaker then let the target be I not the [committee],” he said.

Thomas Mutavhatsindi, deputy president of the Pan Africanist Youth Congress, said the move was uncalled for and ”there was no proper investigation before the decision was made”.

”To us this … looks like the race for leadership has been reduced from four candidates to two. Mogoba had [said] he would not stand for president at the June congress. Thami ka Plaatjie does not seem to have enough support. So [deputy president Motsoko] Pheko and Maxwell [Nemadzivhanani] are in the running. Maxwell is a threat, hence all these allegations.”
