Rhodes student killed in midnight struggle

A female student was killed during a struggle in a Rhodes University hostel room on Monday, police reported.

Captain Nomazwi Nkombisa said students at the hostel heard a quarrel in room 66 of Olive Schreiner House at 12.15am.

They called a warden who found two students, a man and a woman, in a pool of blood.

The police and an ambulance were summoned, but the woman was found to have died on the scene. Police found a knife and a bloodied pair of scissors in the room. The woman had multiple stab wounds.

The man aged 27 was still alive and taken to Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth, said Nkombisa.

He had sustained stab wounds to the neck and chest and was under police guard as he was regarded as a suspect in the case. The woman’s name was being withheld as her relatives had not been notified, said Nkombisa.

She was originally from Zimbabwe but was known to have relatives in Springs.

According to information the pair had broken off a relationship a week ago, said Nkombisa. – Sapa
