Former Springbok utility back Thinus Delport will be available for national selection after his English club Gloucester and South African Rugby Pty Ltd agreed to a loan arrangement for the remainder of the year.
Delport will arrive in South Africa later in the week and will play for the Falcons in the Absa Currie Cup play-offs. He has also been selected in the South African ‘A’ side to play Argentina in Wellington later this month.
Springbok coach Rudolf Straeuli, who earlier this year stressed the importance of having the best South African players available for World Cup selection, said he was delighted at Delport’s return and applauded the efforts of SA Rugby Pty Ltd and Gloucester’s assistance.
”Both SA Rugby and Gloucester have acted in the interests of the player. It is a great opportunity for Thinus. He has played well for Gloucester this year and he provides depth to the fullback and wing positions,” said Straeuli.
Delport, who linked up with Gloucester in 2002, has played 12 tests.
”A few months ago I would not have believed this to be possible,” said Delport.
”I am grateful to the Springbok coach and SA Rugby Pty Ltd for their willingness to consider me and look forward to playing for the Falcons in the weeks ahead. I will always be indebted to Gloucester for the opportunity of reviving my career and thank them for agreeing to a loan in this World Cup year.”
