Over 3m SA kids registered for child support

More than three million South African children are registered for the Child Support Grant (CSG), it emerged on Thursday.

“The registration of 3 181312 million children is one of the greatest achievements that the democratic South Africa has made. This milestone could not have been possible without the active involvement of all South Africans of goodwill; particularly faith-based organisations, business, labour, non-governmental organisations, community-based organisations and public servants,” South Africa’s Social Development Minister Dr Zola Skweyiya said in a statement.

“The social grants like the Child Support Grant, the Foster Care Grant, the Care Dependency Grant and other services, are very important means of government to ensure that we alleviate children from poverty and other conditions of vulnerability.

“They are a critical element in our efforts to realise the socio-economic rights of our children as enshrined in our Constitution and thereby help build a South Africa fit for children,” Skweyiya said.

The Department of Social Development will, in August this year, undertake many activities to celebrate the three million registered children threshold, as part of intensifying its campaign to register all eligible children younger than nine years of age for the CSG this year.

Skweyiya is scheduled to address a media briefing on the issue at 10am local time on Friday. – I-Net Bridge
