Staff at the University of the North West have stayed away from work following a dispute with campus managers over recruitment and promotion, it emerged on Thursday.
Chris Mopaka, a protection service officer at the institution, said staff members had ”so many demands” he could not divulge them to reporters.
”They are so many,” Mopaka insisted when he was asked what was the cause of the strike at the university. ”I can’t tell you; they’re so many.”
Mopaka answered the phone when journalists tried to establish what was happening at the institution, saying: ”No one is here; they’re all on strike.”
Captain Keobaka Moses said he had seen many people holding placards at the university. There was no vandalism.
SABC radio news reported that the strike has entered its third day on Thursday, leaving more than 5 000 students who enrolled with the institution without lectures since Tuesday.
Staff members have declared a dispute with management for allegedly breaching a moratorium on appointments and promotions before the envisaged merger with Potchefstroom University, the public broadcaster said. – Sapa
