Internationally-known classical-jazz outfit the Soweto String Quartet will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Saturday with a concert at Carnival City outside Johannesburg.
The anniversary coincides with the release of the quartet’s latest album Our World. They will perform, for the first time, tracks from the new album.The album is expected to be released on September 1.
The celebration at the Big Top Arena on Saturday is expected to be a spectacular, memorable showcase of some of South Africa’s most seasoned musicians, the organisers of the event said in a statement.
The event will feature artists such as Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Vusi Mahlasela, Pops Mohammed and Umanji.
The quartet is made up of three brothers Reuben, Sandile and Thami Khemese and their long time friend Makhosini Mnguni.
For the past 25 years, the quartet has been performing around the world as ambassadors for South Africa. Their music is a blend of traditional rhythms, township jazz, pop songs, jazz-fusion and strong classical influences.
Their career has taken them to almost every corner of the world to perform for kings, queens, presidents and music lovers of every race, creed, religion and gender.
