kulula.com, the low-fare airline in the Comair Limited stable, announced on Monday that it will be undergoing a complete fleet replacement programme in the near future with a view to further decreasing its operating costs by 30%.
“There is a unique opportunity currently in the aircraft market to completely replace our existing fleet with much more cost efficient aircraft which will enable us to continue offering prices that are 42% lower than our competitors,” said kulula.com Commercial Director, Gidon Novick.
The favourable rand/dollar exchange rate as well as the current oversupply of commercial aircraft in the world has resulted in the opportunity for the airline to lock in lower operating costs for the future.
kulula.com, which recently carried its one millionth customer, plans to acquire four McDonnel Douglas MD82 aircraft to operate its five domestic routes within South Africa. The latest addition to kulula.com’s network is a daily return service between Johannesburg and George which commenced last week. The new aircraft will be painted in kulula.com”s trademark bright green livery.
The MD82 has a capacity of 162 seats and an extremely quiet cabin as the engines are situated at the rear end of the aircraft. – I-Net Bridge
