Zambia’s former director of intelligence Xavier Chungu has been re-arrested only hours after he was freed from jail by a court that cleared him of theft charges, his brother said on Thursday.
Chungu was picked up on Wednesday night from his home by armed police officers who briefly detained him at a police station before he was released on police bond, his brother Emmanuel Chungu said.
”He was arrested and charged with 85 counts of theft of public funds,” Chungu said.
The former spy master has been jointly charged with former president Frederick Chiluba, former Zambian Ambassador to the US Atan Shansonga and businessman Faustin Kabwe, Chungu said.
The four are expected to appear in court on October 13, said Chungu, who had accompanied his brother to the police station.
Chungu and Chiluba have been arrested on a number of occasions and charged with numerous criminal charges of theft of public funds, abuse of office and corruption. They have denied the charges. – AFP
