Permits withdrawn in KZN taxi war

Both taxi associations involved in violence on the Durban North Coast on Thursday and Friday last week have had their permits taken away, police said on Tuesday.

The provincial taxi board withdrew their permits in order to get them to come to the negotiating table, said police inspector Michael Read.

Read said the Stanger Taxi Association and the Maphumalo Taxi Association were in negotiations at the moment, and only once an agreement had been reached would their permits be reissued.

The violence started on Thursday when two people were killed in the Cranebrook area of KwaDukuza. On Friday, four people were killed and three injured in what was apparently a retaliatory attack.

Later on Friday the Stanger taxi association blocked the main road of Stanger.

Commuters would not be affected by the suspension of the permits, because there were other taxi ranks in the area, and alternative transport was available, Read said. — Sapa
