Rain halts SA run machine

Rain halted play in the third cricket Test on Monday between South Africa and the West Indies with the hosts leading by 293 runs.

When the players were forced from the field midway through the afternoon session on the third day at Newlands, Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis had steered South Africa to 188 for two.

Gibbs is not out on 82 and Kallis on 63. Herschelle Gibbs led a South African recovery after the West Indies struck twice in two overs shortly after the start.

At lunch on Monday, South Africa had progressed to 127 for two in their second innings, an overall lead of 232.

Resuming on their overnight 38 without loss, South African captain Graeme Smith shouldered arms to a Fidel Edwards delivery that cut back and clipped his leg stump.

In the next over, first innings centurion Jacques Rudolph edged Vasbert Drakes to be out for a second ball duck to reduce the South Africans to 50 for two.

However, Jacques Kallis and Gibbs have put on 77 for the third wicket to restore South Africa to their commanding position.

Gibbs took a hundred balls to reach only his second Test century at his home ground and will resume after the break on 54 with Kallis on 38. – Sapa
