Benfica’s Hungarian international striker Miklos Feher collapsed and died after suffering a heart attack during the Portuguese giants league game on Sunday against Vitoria, public radio RSP announced on Monday.
Feher (24) was stretchered off the pitch after he collapsed after being given a yellow card during the game which Benfica won 1-0.
The game was stopped for 15 minutes as team doctors tried to resuscitate the player. He was transported by ambulance to hospital at Guimaraes, where he died later.
According to private radio TSF, dozens of fans gathered outside the hospital as his Benfica players awaited news of their colleague.
Feher, who made 18 appearances for Hungary, began playing for Benfica of Lisbon in 2002. – Sapa-AFP
