Swallows fly to next round

Moroka Swallows swept Hellenic aside in the first round of the Absa Cup competition at PAM Brink Stadium in Springs on Sunday and booked a place in the last 16 of the lucrative showpiece.

The Beautiful Birds, as Swallows are popularly known, beat the Greek Gods 2-0.

Swallows led 2-0 at half-time.

They mounted their attack from the opening minute and came close to scoring but striker Shaun Permall let them off the hook as he failed to make use of the scoring opportunity.

The opening goal came through a penalty when Hellenic’s defender Ronald Kelly handled the ball inside the box in the 20th minute. Referee Daniel Bennett pointed the spot and Gary McNab made no mistake.

Seven minute later Mark McVeigh made it 2-0 when he took advantage of a goalkeeping error by Dithebe.

Defender Ashley King committed a foul inside the box in the 75th minute and Bennett awarded Swallows their second penalty.

But McNab’s shot hit the upright.
