Tanzania’s semi-autonomous Zanzibar and Pemba islands will have their own flag before the end of the year, officials said.
”The government [of Zanzibar] is finalising the process of having the islands’ official flag before the end of this year,” Zanzibar Minister of State Responsible for Information, Salum Juma Othman, told the local Parliament on Thursday.
He said Zanzibar’s Constitution provides for the islands’ own flag and the government will soon invite artists to propose the format of the flag and colours before its final version is approved.
In January, the union Parliament sitting in Tanzania’s central administrative capital of Dodoma was told that there was no objection for Zanzibar having its own flag.
Zanzibar had its own flag before the union with the then Tanganyika on April 26 1964. — Sapa-AFP
