Rangers maul Durban Stars

Rangers’ vast superiority saw them through to the Absa Cup quarterfinals when they beat Durban Stars 5-2 on Saturday night at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban.

Rangers led 3-1 at interval.

The Mighty Maulers’ goals were scored by Keryn Jordan and Alton Meiring, who netted four times. The visitors scored through Pogiso Mokotjo and Lungelo Makhanya.

It was, however, the First Division side’s Pogiso Mokotjo who rifled a beautiful goal in the third minute to open the scoring.

Jordan equalised in the 22rd minute.

Between these two goals, Stars lost Collin Reilly, who was ordered to take an early shower for a vigorous tackle on Edson Minga.

Rangers coach Steve Khompela made a surprising change when he took off Dale Studzinski for Meiring after 37 minutes.

The move paid dividends within five minutes as Meiring found the back of the net twice — in the 42nd minute and again in the 45th minute.

Meiring returned from the break and began where he left off by finding the net on two more occasions — in the 51st and 54th minutes.

However, the visitors showed a measure of fighting spirit when, in the 66th minute, Makhanya grabbed a goal back. — Sapa
