US donates equipment to fight crime

The United States government on Thursday donated more than R2,5-million-worth of equipment to the South African Police Service and the Scorpions to assist them in investigating commercial crime.

US embassy spokesperson Daniel Stewart said the equipment donated includes computers, software, digital cameras and projectors, cellphones and cassette recorders.

He said the donation formed part of a week-long training course that ended on Thursday. It was also funded by the US and attended by at least 50 police and 20 Scorpions members.

Stewart said the US has been active in the South African justice system since 1998 and has provided more than R16-million yearly to fund programmes in institutions including the police, the National Directorate of Public Prosecutions and the Department of Correctional Services.

”These programs focus on many issues including organised crime, financial crimes, rehabilitation, drug abuse and basic policing,” said Stewart. — Sapa
