Police arrested a match commissioner in Welkom on Sunday, bringing to 19 the number of soccer officials who have been picked up in Operation Dribble, the police’s swoop against alleged match-fixing in soccer.
Spokesperson for the office of the national police commissioner, senior superintendent Selby Bokaba, said the match commissioner was likely to join a club director from Gauteng, also arrested at the weekend, in the dock in Welkom magistrate’s court on Monday.
More arrests of high profile people were expected soon, he said.
”Tomorrow we are hoping to get warrants for one or two people who are very powerful figures within the soccer fraternity,” Bokaba said on Sunday night.
On Friday, police said seven referees and officials arrested last week in the same operation were also expected to appear in court on Monday.
Operation Dribble has seen arrests and court hearings in Johannesburg, East London, Randburg and Pretoria.
All those arrested face charges under the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Act after the SA Football Association asked the police to conduct an investigation.
So far, 10 referees have been released on R1 000 bail. – Sapa
