A Cape Town gangster was found guilty in the regional court on Thursday of keeping a brothel, and as an accomplice on two rape charges involving minor girls.
Amien Andrews appeared before magistrate Chris Naude, who is expected to pass sentence on Thursday afternoon.
Defence attorney Chris Smit told the court he wished to call three witnesses to lead evidence in mitigation of sentence.
Andrews’s brothel was well known in the underworld as ”Amien’s girls”, where girls aged between 12 and 16 were on offer for sex.
He and 12 co-accused faced similar charges involving 12 minor girls.
Seven of his co-accused were acquitted or died on all charges in the course of the marathon trial, and the remaining five co-accused, including two women, were on Thursday pronounced not guilty as well.
The small courtroom was packed with members of the child rights’ pressure group Molo Songololo.
Andrews has admitted 11 previous convictions, among them one for murder, three for serious assault, theft, housebreaking and robbery. — Sapa
