Wartime bomb forces major evacuation

Explosives experts defused an American World War II bomb in a Berlin suburb on Friday after authorities evacuated 9 500 residents from apartments, several retirement homes and a hospital.

The 250kg bomb was recently discovered during systematic searches for unexploded ordnance in Oranienburg, whose chemical and aircraft industries were heavily bombed by the Allies toward the end of the war.

Authorities allowed the evacuated residents to return home after about five hours when bomb-disposal experts completed their work without a hitch, city official Sylvia Holm said.

Wartime bombs, grenades and other unexploded munitions are still uncovered regularly in Germany, six decades after the end of the war.

It was the 95th unexploded World War II bomb uncovered in Oranienburg over the past 15 years, Holm said. — Sapa-AP
