An art teacher who was jailed for having sex with a 13-year-old pupil and bore his child has said that she and the now 21-year-old plan to marry, according to news reports late on Thursday.
Mary Kay LeTourneau, who was 34 when she began a relationship with then-sixth grader Vili Fualaau in 1996, has reunited with him since her release from prison earlier this year. She told ABC News in an interview to be aired on Friday that they intend to carry out their longstanding plans to marry.
LeTourneau was married with two children when the affair first began as an ”emotional attraction”.
She told the network that she feels ”a very deep love” for Fualaau.
When first paroled several years ago after serving part of her sentence for having sex with a child not legally capable of consent, LeTourneau broke a court order by again having sex with Fualaau, from whom she became pregnant. She was jailed again because Fualaau was still a minor, and gave birth in prison.
The court revoked custody and awarded the child to Fualaau and his mother.
Since her release, a judge has ruled that authorities cannot keep them apart if her victim, as an adult, chooses to have contact with LeTourneau. – Sapa-DPA
