An Israeli aircraft fired a missile on Sunday at a Palestinian house in a Hamas stronghold in Gaza’s Jebaliya refugee camp, killing at least one person, witnesses and rescue workers said.
One 28-year-old Palestinian civilian was killed, hospital officials said. Three others, including a girl, were wounded.
The home targeted was near the Kholfa Mosque, a Hamas stronghold in the crowded Jebaliya refugee camp. All the casualties were civilians, and it was unclear why the house was targeted. The damage from the strike was extensive, and several other houses and stores were damaged, witnesses said.
Smoke and dust billowed in the air as ambulances rushed to the scene. Rescue workers picked through the rubble searching for casualties.
The attack was the latest in a 10-day-old Israeli operation in Jebaliya.
The army is hunting down Palestinian militants who fire rockets at Israeli towns. Tanks and infantry are operating in Jebaliya’s narrow alleys, and the army has increased missile strikes on militants and weapons workshops. Since the operation began, 95 Palestinians have been killed.
