The Natal Sharks played with fierce pride in their 63-33 mauling of the SWD Eagles in a Currie Cup one-way match at Outeniqua Park in George on Saturday. They were 32-0 up at half-time.
The Sharks, playing in the depths all season, surfaced for a final bite in a big way and scored nine tries in total — six by the forwards who were machine-like in their destruction of their opposition for the first time this season.
Lock Albert van den Berg was always on the advance, which earned him a hat-trick of tries. Solly Tyibilika, who has not seen much action lately, scored twice and number eight Bertus Mulder — who has not played since July — also scored.
The backs were just as vibrant with Ricardo Loubscher shining with Deon Kayser in his final match and it was a fitting farewell as he shared his 50th Currie Cup match with John Smit.
Flyhalf Brent Russell was also on fire. He was all over the Eagles and should have scored more than his one try.
The Sharks ended their season with their first — and only — away victory of the season. — Sapa
